… of maturation, desire and loss, to the change of the seasons
The Shadow Gardens
The Shadow Gardens (2004) explores the archetypal experience of sexual initiation through the Ancient Greek story of Goddess Persephone’s underworld journey.
To the Ancient Greeks this journey explained the phenomena of winter as Persephone’s grieving mother ceased to bless the earth. My retelling of this story also equates this profound experience of change – of maturation, desire and loss, to the change of the seasons.
The Shadow Gardens takes its name from Roberto Calassó’s beautiful retelling of Persephone’s underworld journey in The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony.
